George McGovern

George Stanley McGovern (19 July 1922 to 21 October 2012) was an American historian, authorUS representativeUS senator and the Democratic Party presidential nominee in the 1972 presidential election. He was the first senator to challenge the growing US military involvement in Vietnam in a speech delivered on the Senate floor in September 1963. He continued to oppose the war throughout his political career. For his presidential campaign, McGovern advocated withdrawal from the Vietnam War in exchange for the return of American prisoners of war and amnesty for draft evaders who had left the country.
