Gloria Emerson

Gloria Emerson (19 May 1929 to 3 August 2004) was an American author, journalist and New York Times war correspondent. She won the 1978 National Book Award in Contemporary Thought for her book about the Vietnam War, Winners and Losers. The book was based on her coverage of the war when she returned to Vietnam in 1970 writing for the New York Times. She exposed false body countsunearned commendations to field-grade officers, the use of hard drugs by American soldiers and the failure of veterans to be able to readjust to American society after the war. She also reported on the suffering of the Vietnamese people. At a 1981 conference on the Vietnam War, she declared US spokesman and host of the Five O’Clock Follies Saigon briefings Barry Zorthian “a determined and brilliant liar.”
