Thái Bình

Thái Bình is a city in the Red River Delta of northern Vietnam. It is the capital of Thái Bình Province. Thái Bình was the home of Tạ Quốc Luật, who captured Christian de Castries and raised the victory flag in the Battle of Điện Biên Phủ at the end of the First Indochina War (1946-1955). Another native of Thái Bình, Bùi Quang Thận, led a group of Northern tanks and entered the headquarters of South Vietnam’s government to make president Dương Văn Minh unconditionally surrender during the Second Indochina War (1955-1975). Thái Bình Province was also the homeland of several famous Vietnamese political dissidents and humanitarians: for example, Thích Quảng Độ, a Vietnamese Buddhist leader and critic of the Vietnamese government.
