Throughout its history, the Vietnam National University has had several name changes. It was first established in 1906 as the Indochinese University (Đông dương Đại học Viện). In November 1945 it was renamed the Vietnam National University (Việt Nam Quốc gia Đại học) and became the University of Hanoi (Hà Nội Đại học hiệu) in June 1956. However, in 1993, the University of Hanoi, the Hanoi National University of Education and the College of Foreign Languages were merged to become the Vietnam National University, Hanoi (Đại học Quốc gia Hà Nội).
